Our little guy turned 10 months on Monday. He was 1 ounce shy of 21 pounds and is 30 inches long.  He pulls himself up with ease now and if you hold his hands he can walk around.  He loves playing in his room (playpen) by himself but when he has enough he will let you know.  Also with the pulling up in the crib he has started to suck, chew on the railing, so I ordered a railing cover and should get that today!  He is such a sweet boy and every where I take him everyone just thinks he is the cutest and sweetest as he smiles at everyone! 🙂

Since my last post, things have continued to be a little hectic.  Still computer issues, hubby got the wrong check from a client on Saturday, we had to fix our bed on Monday (nothing exciting broke it  lol) and hubby got an oil change Monday morning that turned out to be almost disastrous.  It turned out the oil filter was warped causing his engine and our garage floor and driveway to get soaked with oil.  Jiffy Lube corrected the problem and also cleaned up the mess.  Now hubby has a cold and Lil’ guy’s sleeping seems to be getting worse.  This brings me to my Throwback Thursday post.

I have been feeling run down much like I felt when our little guy was not sleeping well at all, before we did the cry it out method of sleep training.  Last night, for example, he was up at 2am, 4:30am, 5:45am, 6:30am and then 7:30am.  I gave him Tylenol at bedtime and then again at 4:30 hoping it would help, but not so much.    Here is the Lil’ guy at 2 months, asleep in my lap after nursing.  On Tuesday this week I tried to get him to nap for an hour and nothing, so I went to get him and held him in my arms and he promptly fell asleep for 40 minutes.  I sure hope it starts to get better.  UGH! 004

Thanks for reading.

tough week . . . October 20, 2013

Well, perhaps the toughest part of the week was all of the computer issues hubby and I had.  We have had issues here and there, but this week seemed especially full of them.  Hubby had 2 days where he would try to log in and his computer kept locking up.  I mean 2 hours worth of this.  Makes for a difficult time when there is a bunch of work to be done.  Then my machine gives me the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) that I have talked about before, at least once a day.  Sometimes this happens immediately when it boots up, other times it is right in the middle of a project I am working on!

We are ready for new machines.  So if there is anyone out there with a lot of computer knowledge or know of someone who can recommend a good computer please reply!  We are PC users and want to stay with Windows 7 Professional.

Monday and Tuesday I had horrible migraine pain!   I think my hormones have finally leveled out after the pregnancy.  The last time I had a migraine like that was before I was pregnant.  I knew it was the impending weather front because the next day after the front made its way through I was fine.  UGH!  Then on Tuesday Lil’ Guy spit up on me twice and peed on.  His diaper was full and so I guess it just overloaded as I was holding him.  Of course I had just made a joke to my hubby because of the computer issues and the migraine I said all I need now is to be pooped on.  So about 2 minutes after I said that I said to hom “well, I am actually getting peed on right now.”  I could feel the warmth and wetness.  Thankfully it wasn’t poop!

Then there is healthcare.  I will go ahead and put this out there, I did NOT vote for Obama, I did NOT want Obamacare.  Now I am required to apply.  I have health insurance through the state-run plan.  I was able to get a really good plan after I quit my job (and my COBRA benefits ran out).  I was really hoping I could stay on it, no such luck!  So Friday I spent about an hour or so trying to create my account.  I thought I was done as it say it was in progress.  So yesterday when I logged in to see what was going on, it appeared nothing was going on.  I clicked the link to view my application and a window popped up that said it was not complete.  WHAT?!?!?!?!  So I spend ANOTHER HOUR completing the application that I have completed the day before!  This time I get a window that says “Your application has been processed and your eligibility results are ready for your review.” and there is a nice bog green button below that reading “View Results”.  So I click it.  A new page pops up with a logo and the words “Start Your Application” (WTF?) and then it quickly changes to another page that has

Your application was received and has been processed.

Your detailed eligibility results are ready

And there is another nice big green button below that reading “View Eligibility Results”

I click it and guess what?  I new tab opens up and the page is white.  Nothing is on it.  The end of the web address has “null” which tells me I am not going to see anything, which I don’t!

So I try to “Live Chat” with support and all they can tell me is that it shows “In Progress” so it isn’t ready yet, even though it states that is is!!!!!

I am PO’d about this and will now have to make a call to see what the story is.  I of course checked again today (Sunday) and still the same.  How long did they have to prepare this site?  And to have all these issues and require people to be signed up my March!  At this rate there will be MILLIONS without healthcare all because of the issues with the website.

Oh and they don’t even have the algorithms set up to be smart.  I enter our Lil’ guys info; date of birth etc.  And you would think that it would be able to know that he is only 10 months old.  Nope.  I still have to answer if he will be paying any Alimony or Student Loan Interest. REALLY????

I have no confidence in this and I just hope the person I get on the phone knows something and can help me.  I certainly don’t want to have to discuss my options for healthcare with a complete stranger.  I would like to be able to review this in the privacy of my own home and make the decision without them.  I will update you when I know more.

And last but certainly not least!  Our Lil’ guy has had quite the week.  So not too long ago he started crawling full force (about 3 weeks ago) and sitting up great!  Well, this week he learned to pull himself up in the crib.  Yes he can stand now.  But I am not sure he knows how to sit himself back down.  This happened Thursday.  I should have known something was up, he seemed to want to nurse more starting the day before and since then.  He woke up at 1am on Friday morning and again at 5, 7 and 7:30am.  Then his naps nose-dived.  He did not take one nap on Friday!  All he would do is stand up and cry in his crib.

Then as I was getting him ready for bed, I decided to swipe my finger in his mouth and feel his bottom gum.  Yes!  A tooth started to pop through,  and from the picture (below) it looks like another one may be close behind.  Now it all made sense!  I promptly gave him some Tylenol and his nighttime bottle and once in his crib he was out in under 5 minutes (7:05pm)  and slept until 5:45am.  Poor thing was so tired.  His naps yesterday were short (2 half hour naps) but at least napped.  He was still up a couple of times last night.  As you can imagine none of us are getting a great night’s sleep.  Some days I feel like we are back to his newborn days,   But thankfully it isn’t quite that bad.   I think it just feels like that because we are used to longer stretches of sleep and we haven’t been getting them.

So that is how this week has been.  This week HAS to be better right?

On a side note, I just made a cake!  This was the EASIEST cake I have ever made.  I saw a post on FB and have wanted to try this for the past week and a half and finally just did it.  You take one yellow cake mix and one 15oz can of pumpkin.  That is it!  Mix it together with a mixer and put it in a 9×13 pan (I sprayed it with Pam) and bake at 350 for 28-35 minutes.  I actually did 34 minutes.  It is VERY moist and oh so tasty and the best part . . . LOW FAT!!!  The cake mix has a total of 15 grams of fat and the pumpkin has 1.75 grams of fat, for a total of 16.75. If you make 10 pieces that is less tan 2 grams of fat per piece!  WOW!!!  You have to try it.  And for those who are Gluten free, I know they make Gluten Free cake mixes and I know the pumpkin is gluten-free, so give it a try.  I did by some frosting to put on it, but I may eat it without,  It is THAT good!!!

Here are the pictures from today’s post!
Thanks for reading!

You can see on his left is the tooth popping through and on his right you can see some white which looks like the other tooth just under the surface.

Here is Mr. Fussy .  I went in after he woke up and caught him mid fuss.  We have since lowered the mattress to the lowest position.  I would rather be safe than sorry.  He can still pull up and stand he is just a little lower so it is the perfect height for him to chew on the railing.  (great new problem to solve.)

And here is the Pumpkin cake.  I took a bite out of the corner with a fork and it was so yummy!  Can’t wait to see what hubby thinks about it.

9 months . . . September 24, 2013

On September 8th Lil’ guy turned 37 weeks and 2 days.  Not much of a milestone, but that was actually equal to the amount of time I was pregnant with him.  Just a fun fact.  But on September 21st he turned 9 months!  I know I say this every month, but the time is just going by so fast.  I actually starting thinking of his first birthday party.  I am glad it falls on a Saturday so we can actually have the party on his birthday.  I know we are going to keep it kind of small.  But it is fun to think of what kind of decorations to get and if he will finally be crawling then or be walking and if he will finally have teeth by then.

Still no teeth, but I am not that concerned.  Some babies are slow to get teeth.  Just like some are slow to crawl or walk.  I really think he is moments away from crawling as he gets on his hands and knees and rocks back and forth a lot and also propels himself forward.

He has started babbling more and says Ma Ma more.  Just run-on’s like Da Da, but still fun to hear.  I have gotten the hang of getting him in and out of the car seat more.  When I am getting him out he actually starts to pull his way out.

Other than that not too much going on.  The weather has been really nice lately and we have gone on a 2-mile walk several days in a row.  It feels so good to be exercising again and I know the fresh air is good for everyone.

His sleep is still going well.  He is usually asleep by 7:30-8pm.  Some nights he cries some nights he doesn’t.  He sleeps through until around 6-7am.  If he does wake up crying before then I give it a few minutes and he usually falls back to sleep.  Then once he gets up I feed him and am able to put him back down and he usually falls back to sleep and gets up for the day around 8:30-9am depending on when he first got up.  Napping is still hit and miss.  Some days he will only nap 30 minutes at a time.  Other days, like yesterday, he did 35 minutes and then an almost 2 hour nap.  If he does long naps I can get 2 out of him.  If they are shorter I try for 3.

I introduced pureed chicken on September 13th.  He likes it and I just made some pureed pears yesterday.  I really do enjoy being able to make his food for him.  I think it is much cheaper than buying baby food and I like that I know what is in it. 🙂  And most importantly he enjoys them.

My milk supply is not that great, but I am doing what I need to do for him.  I introduced an additional bottle in the middle of the day.  So he gets 6 ounces of formula then and an 8 ounce bottle at night.  I pump in the evening after he is in bed and if I am lucky can get about 2.5 ounces (2-3 pumps over and hour or 2).  Yesterday I took about 3 bottles that I had pumped the last few nights and gave him breast milk instead of formula in the afternoon.  Not sure if it was that or the fact that he hadn’t napped well the day before but after that is when he napped for almost 2 hours.  I will say it was my milk that did it. 🙂

I set up a little play area in his room and put him in there with some of this toys each day so that he has time to play by himself.  I have the free camera we got set up so I can watch him.  He is getting into that clingy stage a bit.  If he is in a position to see me if I walk down the hall he will start to cry but then will stop after a minute.  Then if he sees me again he will cry again for about a minute then be ok.  I have to fight the urge sometimes to go “rescue” him, as I know he is ok.  Besides, I am usually trying to get some house work done, so it is good for both of us.

The times I take him out to run errands he is such a good boy.  I took him with me to get my flu shot and he did so well.   The other day I had to run to CVS and then to Walgreens (CVS didn’t have what I needed) and each time someone talked to him and he just smiled at them in response.  One time he started to babble.  I am glad that he doesn’t act shy around other people.  I don’t know if he ever will or not.  But a few people commented that he was such a good boy and so sweet.  I have to agree.  I just love this little guy so much!

8 months and potpourri . . . August 21, 2013

Our little guy is 8 months old today.  I fall more in love with him everyday!  He isn’t crawling yet, but he moves himself around with his arms when he is on his tummy; in circles, backwards, forwards.  I call it his army crawl.  I think it will be soon when he figures out he will move better on his knees.    He weighed 19lbs. 1.5 ounces today and I measured him to be about 29.5 inches long.  Our car seat limit is 30 pounds or 30 inches, so he is approaching that!  I have a car seat picked out and plan on getting it at Buy Buy Baby (when they get them in stock – popular brand).  It is the same price as Amazon and I can use a 20% off coupon at Buy Buy Baby.  It is the Chicco Nextfit.  It has great ratings and I think it will fit good in the backseat.  I am ready for a car seat that I do not remove from the car.  I do love the convenience of being able to just lift the seat out when I am in a hurry or want to make a quick trip to the store and can put the car seat in the shopping cart, but at around 15 pounds for the seat and 19 pounds of baby, that is getting to be pretty heavy for me to lug around.  The convertible car seats are expensive compared to regular car seats, but it should last our little guy 4-5 years.

Now to the potpourri of my post.  I know I have been absent from here for a little bit.  Things have been a bit busy.

My parents came for a visit on August 9th.  Hubby had a concert on August 11 and he needed me to help sell CDs.  Grandma and Grandpa always love the chance to watch the baby so they didn’t mind making the trip from St. Louis.    The concert went well and I sold 21 CDs, so I was glad to be able to help.  I hate being away from our little guy, but it was also good to get out of the house. 🙂  I was going to be gone for about 6 hours, so I thought I would take along my manual pump and pump once or twice since I typically feed the little guy.  The show started at 3, so once the lobby was empty I headed to the bathroom.  I thought that would be the easiest place.  Of course they don’t have any chairs, so I proceeded to a stall.  I move around a bit and of course the automatic flusher starts to do its thing.  UGH!  So I try to stand still and pump.  This is not going to work, so I decide to slowly sit down.  Thankfully it did not go off and I was able to pump in peace.  Once done I stand up and the toilet flushes a few more times while I am getting myself presentable.  Now I can go and listen to a few songs before intermission.

Once intermission is over I figure I will pump once more and then catch the end of the show and be able to man my post.  One of the ladies who works at the theatre came out into the lobby just as I was about to head to the bathroom again.  We chit-chat and she goes down the hall.  I think she is going to the bathroom, so I decide to wait.  I haven’t done a lot of nursing in public (NIP) and even though it is a manual pump, there is still a little noise to it.  So 5 minutes pass and no sign of her.  I think, maybe she went past the restroom and into an office.  So I go in and of course I can tell she is still in there.  Oh well, I head back to my stall at the end of the row.  I get my things ready again and prepare to pump.  I hear her finish up and walk out and then the smell hits me.  I do understand it is a bathroom and that is the purpose, but geesh!  Now I wish I had somewhere else to pump.  LOL  Ten minutes later and I am ready to leave!  And of course the toilet has flushed about 8 times while I was in there.  I am able to catch the last 2 songs of hubby’s concert and then get out to the lobby to catch the patrons as they leave.  Overall, it was a great time.  It wasn’t the first time I have pumped/fed Lil’ Pete in the bathroom, but it is times like this when I wish there were “family” bathrooms everywhere; a nice room all to oneself.

Then of course after everyone left, I gathered the CDs and headed to meet up with hubby in the theatre.  We loaded the cars and said our goodbyes.  He had another gig and I was going back home.  Of course I missed my entrance on to the highway and had to get the Garmin out.  Thankfully it wasn’t too difficult to find my way back, but my darn hormones were in full force (started yet another period just 3 days later) and I was crying because I felt like an idiot for missing my turn and also because I just wanted to get back home to my little guy.  When I got home, all was well, as I knew it would be.

So I am trying to teach our little guy the word “no.”  Babies should know what this means by this time.  I will be breast-feeding him and he will start to slap my breast.  I take his hand in mind and say “no,” sternly and with a straight face, but not yelling.  You know what this little stinker does?  He gets a big grin on his face and laughs.  Seriously?  This guy is going to be trouble!  LOL  Every time I say no, he laughs.  So I just keep trying.  Maybe he will get it that he isn’t supposed to hit.  Mind you it isn’t hard (sounds worse than it is), I just want him to know not to do that. 🙂

On July 23rd, Lil Pete said “da da.”  Well actually it was more like ” da da da da da da da.”  It was so cute!  It was like he just figured something out.  He would say it in his exersaucer, when we put him down for naps and also in the middle of the night when he would wake up.  I would have loved to hear him say “ma ma” and I keep trying to get him to say it, but it is easier for babies to say “da da”.  I don’t think he has quite put together that “da da” actually goes with his dad, but I know what will come soon.  I just hope he says “ma ma” before “Buddy.”  🙂

He has no teeth yet!  I really can’t believe not one has started to even pop through the gum.  He drools so much!  I keep bibs on him all day.  I go through about 3 each day.  He has been teething for months now.  I can’t say I am too disappointed.  I have heard horror stories of babies getting teeth and then biting down on mom when they breast feed, even drawing blood.  So if he wants to go a couple of more months without teeth, I can deal with that.  We see the doctor October 7, so if he doesn’t have any by then, we can ask what is going on or if we need to worry.

This past weekend hubby had to travel to New Jersey for 2 concerts.  He took Spirit Airlines from O’Hare Airport and they only have one flight out to Atlantic City and one flight back.  Friday, we all got up at 4am so I could drive him.  Lil’ Pete didn’t fuss at all.  I fed him when I got him up.  I really hoped he would sleep in the car, but he did not.  We had a good weekend.  Hubby was able to call Friday night and sing to the little guy as I put him to bed (he does this when he is home and not working).  I did get some stuff done while he was gone.  My area in the home office we share was in desperate need of some organizing.   Now the goal is to keep it this way!  His shows were Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.  Then he has to wait until 5pm Monday to catch his flight back home.  We were all so glad to have him back.   They want him back again next year (4th year) and we talked about maybe taking a little family trip this time.  Driving out there and spending a couple of extra days.  I think it will be fun and it can be little guy’s first time at the beach!  We will see how it all works out.

Sleep has been going ok.  He still fusses and cries a little when he goes down for bed or for naps.  The time at bedtime ranges from less than 5 minutes to almost an hour.  Typically it is around 20-30 minutes.  I really hope this doesn’t last too much longer.  He sleeps pretty well.  Sometimes he will wake up once over night around 2:30, but we let him be and he goes back to sleep or is quiet after about 5 minutes.  Then he wakes at around 5:30-6:30 and I go in and feed him as it has been about 10 hours since he ate.  I can put him back down and he will fall back to sleep after about 30 or so minutes and sleep maybe until 9-9:30.Napping is hit and miss.  Sometimes he will do nap 1 for 1.5 hours and then subsequent naps of 45 min or 30 minutes.  Other days all 3 naps are 30 minutes.  And then there are those days when naps suck!  Today is one of those days!  I heard him stirring at 7am ( I had fed him at 5am).  So I got him and changed him and fed him and held him and then put him back down at 8am.  He wanted no part of a nap (after fussing on and off for over an hour).  I got him up and tried again at 10am.  After 40 minutes he was asleep.  He cried a lot before this and I know it was because he was over tired.  He slept for 40 minutes.  I will be trying to get him down for another nap soon.  Hopefully it will be successful.

I have read that there is a sleep regression around months 8-10 and also what they call Wonder Weeks around week 34 which is where we are at right now.  So this may just be one of those fussy periods.  I take it all with a grain of salt as all babies are different.  Hopefully he can get back to sleeping better soon!

Ok, I think that about catches you up on everything that has been going on.  At least that is all I can think of at the moment.  If I think of anything else I may have missed I will post again.  I am also hoping to get back to my weekly postings next week.

Thanks for reading!

I am always on the lookout for great baby products.  I had read about Sophie the Giraffe shortly after our son was born.   The reviews on Amazon were great and I thought this would be a great product to have.  When he turned 4 months old a friend of ours sent Lil Pete a gift of the smaller Sophie.  As you can see by the photo he took to it immediately.  He loved chewing on it and it was easy for him to hold.  When he got a little older I got him the larger Sophie.  As he is getting closer to popping out a tooth (soon I hope!) he has really enjoyed chewing on this one too.   Both of them are great for teething.  He loves his Sophie and always smiles and reaches for it when I hold it out.
